Why people stay in Watervliet

Watervliet is a city of about 10,000 people north of Albany, wedged between Menands, Troy and Cohoes. It's dominated by the Watervliet Arsenal, a US Army manufacturing facility that has been making cannon and other large-caliber weapons continuously since 1813. It's still active. There's an on-post museum that's open to the public with visitor screening, and it's genuinely interesting if you care about American industrial history.

Beyond the Arsenal, Watervliet is a workaday small city — a few blocks of commercial streets along Broadway, some churches with beautiful old brickwork, decent riverfront access. It's not a tourist destination. Hotel inventory is minimal, and the main reason a traveler ends up here is either cheap chain-hotel pricing or a visit to the Arsenal Museum. Skip as a general base; visit as a half-day stop if the Arsenal interests you.

One or two chain hotels along Broadway or Route 32, $95-130. Free parking, standard chain rooms. Short-term rentals in the residential streets between Broadway and 19th Street are $85-115 and often better value. Avoid rentals directly on Broadway — traffic runs day and night. Nothing here is a destination stay. This is a base for people specifically visiting the Arsenal, or driving through en route to somewhere else.

Part of

CDTA bus 22 or 85 from downtown Albany, about 15 minutes for $1.50. From Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak, Uber $14 or bus 22. From the airport, drive 15 minutes or cab $22. Inside Watervliet, walking is functional along Broadway and the residential grid; a car makes more sense for anything beyond the immediate downtown. Free parking universally.

Questions about Watervliet

Can you visit the Watervliet Arsenal?

The Arsenal itself is active military and closed to the public. The Arsenal Museum inside the base is open to visitors on weekdays 9am-3pm, but requires photo ID and security screening at the main gate. Call ahead — hours occasionally shift.

Is Watervliet a good base for Albany tourism?

Not really. Cheaper hotels than downtown Albany but no real neighborhood atmosphere, limited walkable dining, and you’ll spend $12 Ubers each time you go into the city. Better options include Menands (similar price, better connection) or Rensselaer (train station adjacent).
