What to expect at Ten Broeck Mansion

Ten Broeck is the underrated third act to the Schuyler and Cherry Hill mansions — smaller crowds, cheaper ticket, and a Federal-style interior that survived largely intact because the same family owned it into the 20th century. The famous story is the 1972 discovery of a bricked-up wine cellar containing dozens of bottles of madeira and port that had been sealed since about 1875; some bottles are still on display in the cellar exhibit.

It sits in Arbor Hill, which is a neighborhood in transition — perfectly safe by day, but come during posted hours rather than exploring after dark. The mansion grounds include a formal garden that hosts a summer concert series on Wednesday evenings in July and August. Tours are informal and guides will happily go long if you ask questions; expect 45-60 minutes.
