Washington Park is 81 acres of lawn, lake, and mature trees in the middle of the city, laid out in the 1870s along the same principles as Central Park. The residential blocks around it — State Street west of Willett, Madison Ave west of Lark, and the perimeter avenues — are the prettiest in Albany. Big Victorian townhouses, wrought-iron fences, doctors and professors, dogs on leashes at 7am.
This is a quiet stay, deliberately. There are no bars in the immediate vicinity — you walk five minutes to Lark Street or ten minutes to Delaware Ave for that. What you get instead is the park itself as your front yard: a lake with paddleboats in summer, the Tulip Festival in May, cross-country skiing tracks in January. Suits families, older travelers, and anyone who values quiet over convenience. Skip it if you’re not going to actually use the park.
The Morgan State House on State Street (a bed and breakfast with 15 rooms, $150-220) is the classic pick — it literally faces the park. Otherwise, short-term rentals along Willett Street or State Street west of the park are your best option, $140-200 a night for a genuine Victorian flat. Don’t pay park-adjacent prices to end up on Madison Ave between Lark and Eagle — that's technically Center Square and the view is a highway, not a lake.

Getting around Washington Park
CDTA bus 10 runs along Madison Avenue and stops at the park's south edge — connects to downtown in 10 minutes. From the airport, take a cab ($30) or bus 737 to downtown plus a 15-minute walk. From Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak, Uber is $15. Inside the neighborhood you walk. Street parking around the park is free but limited on Tulip Festival weekend — plan on walking from Lark Street.

Always the weekend around Mother's Day, second weekend of May. Peak bloom depends on weather but the festival itself runs regardless. Hotel prices in Center Square and Washington Park jump 40-60% for that Friday and Saturday — book two months out.
The park itself closes at 11pm and is patrolled but empty after dark — locals don’t walk through it at night. Stick to the surrounding streets (State, Willett, Madison), which are residential and well-lit.
