What to expect at Empire State Plaza
Empire State Plaza is either a brutalist wonderland or a concrete moonscape depending on your taste, but nobody argues about the free Observation Deck on the 42nd floor of the Corning Tower — it's the highest public viewpoint between New York City and Montreal, and on clear days you can see the Berkshires and Vermont's Green Mountains. Below deck level, the concourse tunnel connecting all the buildings doubles as the Empire State Plaza Art Collection, with 92 large-scale abstract expressionist works by Rothko, Frankenthaler, Nevelson, and other mid-century heavyweights.
The Plaza is a full day if you combine it with the New York State Museum (south end) and the Capitol (north end) — all three connect underground so you never step outside in bad weather. In summer, food trucks and free concerts fill the reflecting-pool esplanade on Wednesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime. Bring a photo ID for the observation deck security screening.
