Off-peak, budget chains along Wolf Road and near Central Avenue run $75 to $110 a night. Red Roof Inn Albany Airport and Super 8 by Wyndham on Watervliet Avenue Extension sit at the low end. Downtown properties like the Hampton Inn & Suites on Chapel Street start closer to $140 midweek and climb past $220 during legislative session.
January through March is cheapest, with downtown rooms from $95 as the Legislature is in session but tourism is dead. Late June through August is warm and pleasant, around $150 to $190. The peak spike is Tulip Festival in early May and SPAC concert weekends in nearby Saratoga during July and August, when rates can double.
Downtown near Empire State Plaza suits first-timers who want to walk to the Capitol, The Egg and the Albany Institute of History & Art. Wolf Road in Colonie is best for families with a car, cheaper and near restaurants and the mall. Center Square and Lark Street work for a quieter, brownstone-lined stay with cafes and bars a block away.
CDTA buses run frequently, with a single ride at $1.50 and a day pass at $4. The BusPlus Red Line links downtown to Schenectady along Route 5. Amtrak arrives at Rensselaer station across the Hudson, about $10 by cab to downtown. Honestly, a car makes the region much easier — parking downtown is $10 to $15 a day.
They book on a Tuesday in session week thinking it is a quiet capital and pay $250 for a $130 room. The New York State Legislature sits January through June, and hotels within walking distance of the Capitol fill with lobbyists Monday to Wednesday. Book Thursday to Sunday nights, or stay in Colonie, and the same room drops sharply.
