What to expect at Irish American Heritage Museum

This is a small, one-room museum, but it's the only one of its kind in the country and Albany was chosen because of the city's deep Irish immigrant history — one in five Albanians has Irish ancestry. The permanent exhibit traces Irish emigration from Famine ships to Erie Canal labor to 20th-century American politics, and the rotating cases usually spotlight a single family's papers or a specific event. It takes an hour and lands well as a late-morning stop before lunch on Broadway.

Entry is by suggested donation, so it functions as effectively free. The museum's real draw is its lecture and concert program — Thursday evenings in fall bring free traditional Irish music sessions, and March obviously turns the whole block into a Saint Patrick's Day corridor. If you’re in town in mid-March, book any event a week ahead because they fill.
