Plan on a slow half-day rather than a quick loop.

Enter from the Madison Avenue side to skip the plaza tunnel confusion, and grab a paper map at the info desk because signage between wings is patchy. If you’re doing this with kids, do the 4th-floor carousel and Discovery Place first (energy is finite), then work down through the 9/11 gallery and the Adirondack wilderness diorama.
