What to expect at USS Slater Destroyer Escort Historical Museum
The USS Slater is moored on the Hudson at the foot of Broadway and is the kind of hands-on museum kids remember years later. Tours are guided — you can’t wander freely — and last about 75 minutes, taking you from the mess deck up to the bridge and through cramped berthing compartments that make you understand what 216 sailors packed into 306 feet actually felt like. Guides are often Navy veterans and the anecdotes are the reason to come.
Buy tickets on the pier at the ticket shed; there's no online booking. Tours leave roughly every 45 minutes and the last one is at 15:00 sharp, so aim to arrive by 14:00 at the absolute latest. The ship is not stroller-friendly (steep ladders between decks) and not accessible for wheelchairs below the main deck. Wear closed shoes and expect the interior to be 10°F warmer than outside in summer.
