Center Square is the neighborhood most visitors wish they’d stayed in — 12 blocks of brownstones, Lark Street bars and a 5-minute walk to the Capitol.

What Center Square actually is

Center Square runs roughly from Lark Street east to Swan, and from State Street south to Madison Avenue — twelve compact blocks of 19th-century brownstones, small parks, and Albany's densest concentration of independent restaurants. Lark Street between Madison and Washington is the spine, with El Loco, Cafe Hollywood, and The Point anchoring the strip. It's residential enough to feel like a neighborhood, not a tourist zone, and you’re a 5-minute walk from Empire State Plaza.

Where to eat and drink

El Loco has been doing Tex-Mex on Madison since 1979 — the enchiladas verdes are the move. New World Bistro Bar on Delaware is farm-to-table done right at around $28 a main. For coffee, Stacks Espresso Bar on Lark is the local favorite. Skip the touristy spots closer to the Plaza; Center Square is where you’ll eat better for less. The Ginger Man on Western has 30-plus beers on tap and a solid burger for $16.

Where to stay

The Morgan State House on the Washington Park edge of Center Square is the neighborhood pick at $175 a night. Otherwise there's limited hotel inventory here — most visitors stay at Hilton or Renaissance a few blocks east and walk over. A handful of short-term rentals operate in the brownstones, roughly $145 a night, and give you the most authentic Center Square experience.
