Why people stay in Menands

Menands is a village of about 4,000 people wedged between Albany and Watervliet, along Broadway/Route 32 and the Hudson River. It's mostly single-family homes, a few apartments, some light industry along the river, and a commercial strip. It's not glamorous. It is well-located — you’re 10 minutes from downtown Albany, five minutes from I-787, and 15 minutes from the airport.

For a visitor, Menands is a base with a car. The village itself has one main historic sight (the Albany Rural Cemetery, which is genuinely worth an afternoon), a couple of chain hotels near the Menands Regional Market, and a handful of workmanlike restaurants along Broadway. Nights are quiet in a suburban way. Suits business travelers, families driving through, and cemetery buffs. Skip if you want to walk to nightlife — you’ll be Ubering.

Chain hotels along Broadway and near I-787 — Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, La Quinta — $95-155. Free parking, walkable to a handful of chain restaurants. Best rooms face away from Broadway (traffic noise is real). Short-term rentals in the residential streets between Broadway and Menands Road run $85-130 and give you a whole apartment with a driveway. Avoid the older motels toward Watervliet — several are tired and only marginally cheaper.

Getting around Menands

Part of

CDTA bus 22 runs Broadway through Menands and connects to downtown Albany in 12 minutes for $1.50. Frequent daytime service, thinner nights and Sundays. From the airport, cab is $16 or drive 12 minutes on I-87. From Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak, Uber is $12. Inside Menands, you really want a car — walking Broadway is possible but noisy and unpleasant. Free parking everywhere.

Questions about Menands

Who is buried at Albany Rural Cemetery?

President Chester A. Arthur (a small pink granite monument), several New York governors, and thousands of Civil War veterans in a dedicated section. Also Erastus Corning and much of Albany's 19th-century business elite. The cemetery office has a free map.

Is Menands a good base for visiting Albany?

Yes if you have a car and want cheap chain-hotel prices with easy highway access. No if you want to walk to Albany's tourist sights — you’re 10 minutes drive from Empire State Plaza and there's no scenic route in.
