It's a comfortable, well-off suburb with excellent public schools, quiet residential streets, and a small commercial core in Delmar around the intersection of Delaware Avenue and Kenwood Avenue. There's a good independent bookstore, a decent coffee shop, a farm stand, a couple of restaurants.
For a visitor, Bethlehem is a quiet base — safer, calmer, less interesting than staying in Albany city. Its best asset is the Albany County Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail, a paved 15-km trail that runs from Voorheesville through Delmar into Albany. Suits families visiting relatives, cyclists, and travelers who value a good breakfast over urban energy. Skip if you don’t have a car — Bethlehem is spread out and CDTA service is limited.
Small inventory — a handful of small inns and short-term rentals, plus a couple of chain hotels along Route 9W. $115-175. Best rentals are in the residential blocks around Delmar's core (Adams Street, Kenwood Avenue, Whitehall Road). If you want a real hotel, the Hampton Inn on Route 9W is a solid pick, $130-165. Avoid rentals in Slingerlands unless you’re specifically visiting somebody there — you’re 15 minutes from anywhere useful.

CDTA bus 18 runs from downtown Albany through Bethlehem down Delaware Avenue, about 30 minutes to Delmar for $1.50. Not frequent enough to rely on if you’re doing multiple trips a day. From the airport, drive 25 minutes or cab $40. From Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak, Uber $22. Inside Bethlehem you need a car — the town is spread out. Free parking everywhere.
