May and October: the sweet spots

Early May is Tulip Festival weekend in Washington Park (second weekend of May), and the tulip beds along State Street are legitimately worth planning around. Highs 65 to 72 Fahrenheit, lows in the 40s. Book by February. October brings foliage peaking mid to late month; the Hudson Valley drive south to Hudson or north to Lake George is at its best. Hotel prices average $140 to $180 in Center Square.

Summer: warm, humid, active

June through August, highs 78 to 86 Fahrenheit with regular humidity. Empire State Plaza runs free concerts most Wednesday evenings from late June through August. Saratoga racing season runs late July to Labor Day, which pulls Albany hotel prices up on weekends. Bring a rain jacket; afternoon thunderstorms are frequent. Mosquitoes at Corning Preserve in July can be brutal after 7pm.

Winter: cold but cheap

December through February, highs in the 30s, lows in the teens, and 60 inches of snow across the winter on average. Hotel prices drop 30 to 40 percent; Center Square rooms $95 to $130. Museums and indoor attractions carry the visit. The Egg's winter season is strong. Skip late-January cold snaps when it hits zero Fahrenheit; it is not fun with kids.

Two weekends to avoid

UAlbany graduation (mid-May) and Saratoga's Travers Stakes weekend (late August) each spike hotel prices by 60 to 100 percent within a 30-mile radius. If you can’t move your dates, book by February for May and by April for August.
