Day 1: The Plaza and the Capitol
Start at Empire State Plaza on Madison Avenue by 9am. The free Observation Deck on the 42nd floor of the Corning Tower opens at 10am weekdays and gives you the best orientation over the Hudson. Walk the marble concourse below to see the New York State Museum, also free, which keeps kids busy for a solid two hours with the 9/11 exhibit and the working Sesame Street set. Cross to the New York State Capitol for the free 11am tour; the Million Dollar Staircase is the payoff.
For lunch, grab a hot dog at Gus's on Broadway (about $4) or sit down at Jack's Oyster House on State Street for chowder around $9. Afternoon: the Albany Institute of History & Art on Washington Avenue, $10 adults, $6 kids. It is small, sharp, and has actual Hudson River School canvases. Finish the day with a walk along the Corning Preserve boardwalk on the river.
Day 2: Center Square and Washington Park
Breakfast at Iron Gate Cafe on Western Avenue, around $12 a plate. Walk Lark Street through Center Square, the closest thing Albany has to a strolling neighborhood, and into Washington Park. The tulip beds along State Street peak in early May; the playground near Willett Street is well shaded. This is honestly the area we recommend for families to book a stay: quiet blocks, walkable, and 10 minutes to the Plaza.
Afternoon options: the USS Slater destroyer escort on Broadway ($9 adults) or the Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center out on New Karner Road, free entry with easy trails. Dinner at El Loco Mexican Cafe on Madison, mains $14 to $18, or Cafe Capriccio on Grand Street if you want to spend $30 a head on Italian.
Evening wind-down
Both nights, keep it simple. The Egg hosts family-friendly music and comedy most weekends with tickets from $25; check the calendar before you arrive because shows sell out. If nothing is on, walk to the Palace Theatre on Clinton Avenue where second-run films screen for $6 on weekends. For a drink after the kids are down, The Hollow on North Pearl has decent burgers and a $6 draft list.
