One week in Albany
Seven days that mix the capital city core with three day trips and one long weekend rhythm.

Days 1-2: Downtown core
Follow the 48-hour plan: Empire State Plaza, the Capitol tour, New York State Museum, Albany Institute of History & Art, and Washington Park. Base yourself in Center Square. A mid-range family room on Lark Street runs $140 to $180 a night in shoulder season, and we have seen the same rooms hit $260 during graduation weekends at UAlbany in mid-May, so check dates before you book.
Days 3-4: Troy and Schenectady
Day 3 to Troy, 15 minutes north on Route 787. Walk River Street for the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market on Saturday, or hit Ali Baba on Congress Street for $12 kebabs any day. The Emma Willard School campus is worth an hour just for the Gothic architecture.
Day 4 to Schenectady, 20 minutes west on I-890. Proctors Theatre on State Street runs matinees from $30; the miSci science museum, $15 adults, has a decent planetarium. Eat at More Perreca's on North Jay Street, sandwiches under $10 with bread baked next door since 1914.
Day 5: Saratoga Springs
Thirty-five minutes up the Northway. In summer (late July to Labor Day) it is horse racing at Saratoga Race Course, grandstand admission around $10. Off-season, walk Broadway, drink the mineral water for free at the Peerless Pool spring in Saratoga Spa State Park, and eat at Hattie's Chicken Shack on Phila Street, $22 fried chicken plate. Get back to Albany by dinner.
Days 6-7: Slow down
Day 6 is the Albany Pine Bush Preserve on New Karner Road, free, with 20 miles of trails through rare pitch pine barrens. Afternoon at the USS Slater on Broadway. Day 7, sleep in, brunch at Iron Gate on Western, then the Corning Preserve boardwalk and a farewell dinner at Cafe Capriccio, $28 to $38 mains. Pack Monday-morning coffee from Stacks Espresso on North Pearl before your ride to the airport.

Not if you use it as a base. The city itself takes three days; the other four are Troy, Schenectady, Saratoga, and the Pine Bush, all under 40 minutes away.
Center Square, hands down. You can walk to dinner every night, it is safe, and it puts you within 10 minutes of every downtown attraction.
Yes. CDTA covers downtown but the day trips to Saratoga and the Pine Bush are painful without one. Weekly rentals from Albany International run about $280.
Skip early May graduation weekends (UAlbany and RPI overlap) unless you book by February. Prices double and rooms disappear.
