The drive

I-88 west to Route 28 south, 90 minutes to downtown Cooperstown. There is no train or bus that makes this easy; you need a car. In peak summer, park at the trolley lots on Route 28 or Glimmerglass ($5 all day) and take the free trolley into town, because Main Street parking fills by 10am.

Hall of Fame and beyond

The National Baseball Hall of Fame on Main Street: $28 adults, $17 kids, $23 seniors. Budget three hours minimum. The Fenimore Art Museum on Lake Road, $14, has an underrated American folk art collection and the Thaw Collection of Native American art. Otsego Lake, called Glimmerglass by James Fenimore Cooper, has a public swimming beach at Lake Front Park, free.

Eat and drink

Doubleday Cafe on Main for $14 burgers and family booths. Mel's at 22 on Main for $18 dinner plates and a decent kids menu. Ommegang Brewery, five minutes south on Route 33, does $8 pours and $18 mussels; the grounds are stunning. Coffee and pastry at Stagecoach Coffee on Main, $5.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before they set off on this one.

Is Cooperstown worth the 90-minute drive if you don’t like baseball?

Marginally. The Fenimore Museum and the lake justify a shorter visit, but most of the town's energy is baseball-driven. If nobody in your family cares, skip it for Hudson or Saratoga.

When is Induction Weekend and should I avoid it?

Late July, exact date varies. Avoid it unless you have Hall of Fame tickets and a hotel booked six months out. Roads, parking, and prices all triple.

How much does the Hall of Fame cost for a family of four?

About $90 for two adults and two kids. Combo tickets with the Fenimore Museum save $8 per person.

Can I swim in Otsego Lake?

Yes, at Lake Front Park in Cooperstown, free, or Glimmerglass State Park north of town, $7 per car. Water is clean and cold.
