The top three
Corning Tower Observation Deck (42nd floor, Empire State Plaza): unbeatable views across the Hudson to the Berkshires. But it closes at 4pm on weekdays and is not open weekends, so sunset viewing is only possible in December and January when the sun sets before 4:30. Corning Preserve boardwalk along the Hudson: the water reflects the pink light, and Rensselaer's brick facades across the river catch the final glow. Free, open until dusk, best from June to September when sunset is late enough to grab dinner after.
Prospect Mountain (if you have a car)
One hour north up the Northway to Lake George. Drive the Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway ($10 per car) to the 2,000-foot summit and watch the sun drop over the Adirondacks and Lake George. Open May to October, closes an hour after sunset in summer. This is a legit sunset destination, not just a compromise. Dinner in Lake George Village on the way back.
In-town alternatives
Washington Park's Lake House at dusk in fall is quietly beautiful when the leaves are peaking. Jennings Landing on the Hudson at Broadway does not get direct sunset (river runs north-south) but the western sky lights up over downtown; free parking, good picnic spot. The steps of the New York State Education Building on Washington Avenue at sunset in summer are a locals' secret; the west-facing marble catches gold light for about 20 minutes.
