Honest Weight Food Co-op

On Watervliet Avenue, open daily 7am to 10pm. Not a farmers market but a real cooperative grocery, with the best hot bar in the city ($9 to $12 a plate) and a produce section that beats the chains. Members get discounts; visitors can shop freely. Best for picnic supplies and takeaway dinner if you are staying at a rental with a fridge.

Delmar Farmers Market

Saturdays 9am to 1pm year-round at Bethlehem Middle School on Kenwood Avenue, 10 minutes south of downtown. Smaller than Troy's but genuine, with local farms, bread, and cheese. Good if you are already south. Free parking, cash and cards both work.

Capital District Farmers Market (Menands)

The wholesale market on Broadway in Menands runs an outdoor retail day summer Saturdays. Less atmospheric than Troy but real farmers direct. Get there by 9am for good selection. Free parking. Ten minutes north of downtown.

The one to drive to: Troy Waterfront Farmers Market

Fifteen minutes north on Route 787, Saturdays 9am to 2pm on River Street, moves indoors November to April at the Uncle Sam Atrium. One of the ten best farmers markets in the Northeast. Ninety-plus vendors, live music, pastries at Placid Baker, cheese at Rock Hill Bakehouse, prepared food from Sunhee's Farm and Kitchen ($10 to $14). Do this instead of Albany-based markets if you have one Saturday.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before they set off on this one.

What is the biggest farmers market in the Capital District?

Troy Waterfront Farmers Market on Saturdays, 90-plus vendors year-round. Worth the 15-minute drive from Albany over any in-city option.

Is Honest Weight open to non-members?

Yes, anyone can shop. Members get discounts but you don’t need to join to buy anything.

Are these markets kid-friendly?

Very. Troy has music and space to wander; Delmar is small and easy with a stroller; Honest Weight has a kids' area near the deli.

Do the markets take cards?

Most vendors do, and every market has at least one ATM. Some small stalls still prefer cash, so keep $20 on hand.
