For adults: Lark Street and Broadway

Lark Street between Madison and Washington is the closest thing Albany has to a proper bar strip for grown-ups. The Lionheart Pub for craft beer ($7 to $9 pints), El Loco next door for margaritas, and City Beer Hall on Howard for a bigger space with $6 drafts. Speakeasy 518 tucked behind City Beer Hall does serious $14 cocktails; reserve through their Instagram for weekends.

For live music

The Hollow on North Pearl runs indie and singer-songwriter nights, cover $10 to $15. The Egg on Empire State Plaza has bigger touring acts, tickets $30 to $75. Palace Theatre on Clinton Avenue draws national tours, $45 and up. For local rock and jam, McGeary's Irish Pub on Clinton Square runs a Sunday night session that has been going for 20 years, no cover.

Where to skip

North Pearl Street between State and Clinton after 11pm on weekends turns into a college-bro strip: sticky floors, shouted conversation, watery drinks. Fine if you’re 22 and want that; otherwise stay on Lark. Central Avenue clubs west of Manning have had ongoing safety issues; not worth it. Anywhere advertising drink specials louder than the music is generally a skip.

Family-friendly evening options

If nightlife means dinner plus something at 9pm rather than 1am: Druthers Brewing on Broadway has a family-friendly taproom until 10pm with $6 pints and a kids menu. The Palace Theatre runs family films for $6 on weekends. Empire State Plaza's Wednesday summer concerts run to 9pm and are fine for kids. Skywalk views from the Corning Tower close at 4pm, so plan accordingly.
