Schenectady's Downtown has been rebuilt around Proctors Theatre on State Street. Schenectady is 17 miles from Albany — 25-30 minutes by car, longer with I-90 congestion. The Downtown, while much improved, still gets quiet outside of Proctors show nights and casino weekends. There are stretches of vacancy on Erie Boulevard and the blocks between State and the river. Skip Schenectady for state-business trips, Albany-focused sightseeing, or any plan that involves late-night Lark Street; you will spend the visit driving back and forth.
