Saratoga has more than 40 hotels and inns, with rates from $140 off-season to $500+ during track season in July and August.

Who it suits

Saratoga Springs is 32 miles north of Albany and pulls its own weight as a destination. Downtown Broadway has the historic Adelphi Hotel, Pavilion Grand, and a dense strip of restaurants — Hattie's, Boca Bistro, 15 Church, Druthers. The track (Saratoga Race Course) runs late July through Labor Day and dominates the town during that window. Book Saratoga for the races, a SPAC concert (June-September), Skidmore parents' weekend, or a weekend of the mineral springs and Saratoga Spa State Park. Off-season rates plunge and the town becomes an easy walkable weekend.

Who it doesn’t suit

Saratoga during track season is expensive and packed — expect $400 Marriott rooms, four-night minimums, and dinner reservations three weeks out. If you are visiting Albany specifically, do not base yourself in Saratoga; the 40-minute drive each way gets old. And the town is genuinely quiet in November and early December once the racing crowd has gone and before the holiday season kicks in — that is either a feature or a bug depending on your trip.

Before you book

The questions people ask about Saratoga Springs, answered with this month’s numbers.

How do I get from Saratoga to Albany?

35-40 minutes by car on the Northway (I-87). Amtrak runs a few trains a day between Saratoga and Albany-Rensselaer stations, about 40 minutes.

Is track season worth the prices?

For a first visit, yes — the atmosphere is genuinely unmatched in American racing. For a general Saratoga trip, September-October is the best value.
