The east-side river town has 3 hotels at $105-$145 and sits across the Dunn Memorial Bridge from Downtown Albany — 6 minutes by car.

Who it suits

Rensselaer's single most useful feature is Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak station, the 9th-busiest in the country. The Hilton Garden Inn Troy, Courtyard Albany Airport, and Hampton Inn & Suites at Rensselaer sit within a mile of the station. Book here if you are arriving by train, doing a long weekend without a car, or need an early morning Empire Service to New York. The Dunn Bridge is a 6-minute drive to Downtown Albany, and Ubers to Center Square run about $10-$12.

Who it doesn’t suit

Rensselaer has no walkable dining scene of its own — the hotels sit in a mostly industrial pocket near the tracks. You will drive or Uber every time you want dinner. There is no historic riverfront district here to explore on foot. Skip Rensselaer if you are driving in and have no train involvement; you gain nothing over just booking Downtown Albany. Also skip it if you plan late nights on Lark Street and don’t want to bridge-hop back at 1 a.m.
