The 10-day window in early May when Washington Park turns into 140,000 tulips and hotel rates jump 40%.

The bloom window and what it costs

Washington Park's tulips peak between roughly April 28 and May 12, with the actual Tulip Festival landing on Mother's Day weekend (May 9-10 in 2026). Bloom timing shifts a week either way depending on March temperatures — a warm April pulls it earlier, a cold snap pushes it later. The Albany Parks Department posts weekly bloom updates from mid-April.

Downtown hotel rates run $180-260 on festival weekend versus $130-160 on shoulder weekends. The Renaissance and Hilton Albany fill first because they’re walkable to the park. Book by mid-March if you want either. Hampton Inn Downtown and Holiday Inn Express Wolf Road stay under $180 even peak weekend.

How to work the timing

The weekend itself is crowded — expect 100,000+ visitors, parking chaos around Madison and State, and 45-minute waits for food trucks. If you want tulips without the scrum, come the Tuesday or Wednesday before Mother's Day. Blooms are usually at 90% and the park is nearly empty at 8am. Rates drop to $140 midweek.

The Pinksterfest and Royal Tulip Ball are festival-weekend only, so purists should still target May 9-10. Bring layers — early May in Albany swings between 45°F mornings and 70°F afternoons, and rain kills at least one day most years. State Street's cafes (Stacks, Cafe Nine) open by 7am for pre-crowd coffee.

Is the Tulip Festival free?

Yes, entry to Washington Park during Tulip Fest is free. Food, drink and the KidZone are pay-as-you-go. The Royal Tulip Ball on Friday night is ticketed separately, around $65.

Can I still see tulips the week after Mother's Day?

Usually yes, but they’re past peak. By May 15 most beds are 60% blown and the city begins pulling bulbs around May 18-20. Come by May 14 at the latest.
