Downtown hotel rates run $180-260 on festival weekend versus $130-160 on shoulder weekends. The Renaissance and Hilton Albany fill first because they’re walkable to the park. The weekend itself is crowded — expect 100,000+ visitors, parking chaos around Madison and State, and 45-minute waits for food trucks. If you want tulips without the scrum, come the Tuesday or Wednesday before Mother's Day. Blooms are usually at 90% and the park is nearly empty at 8am. Rates drop to $140 midweek.
The Pinksterfest and Royal Tulip Ball are festival-weekend only, so purists should still target May 9-10. Bring layers — early May in Albany swings between 45°F mornings and 70°F afternoons, and rain kills at least one day most years. State Street's cafes (Stacks, Cafe Nine) open by 7am for pre-crowd coffee.
