When to visit Albany: month by month for 2026
Aerial view of downtown Albany across four seasons
A blunt calendar of Albany's 12 months — average rates, weather, what's open, and whether you should come.
January through April
January: 22°F average, $95 rooms, half of tourism shut, session starts. Skip unless you want cheap. February: still cold, coldest week is usually the second, rates $100, President's Day busy for youth hockey tournaments at MVP Arena. March: mud, budget fight peaks late month, downtown $200 midweek, everywhere else $110. Skip.
April: real spring by month's end, rates climb to $145, tulips emerge, session in full swing but calmer than March. Late April is the shoulder-season winner — pleasant weather, tulip buds, pre-graduation rates. Book by February for late April weekends.
May through August
May: Tulip Fest weekend $220, graduation weekends $280+, mid-May the year's most expensive stretch. Come first week of May or wait until June. June: session ends, rates settle to $135, weather ideal 70s. July-August: humid but great outdoor concerts and Saratoga overflow means Colonie hotels charge $180+ on race weekends. Downtown midweek stays reasonable at $125.
September through December
September: the best month. 74°F, $135 rooms, everything open, restaurants have room. LarkFest weekend jumps rates. October: peak foliage weekends $200+, midweek $155, Columbus Day weekend the priciest. November: rates drop to $115, weather ugly but Thanksgiving week very quiet.
December: three-week holiday buildup then a rate cliff. First three weeks $150, week between Christmas and New Year $89-110. First Night Albany on December 31 is worth timing to. Overall best month for value plus experience: September (weeks 2 and 4). Best month for pure cheap: late July midweek or December 26-30.

Second or fourth week of September, midweek. Weather peaks, no festivals crowding hotels, session dark, rates in the $130s.
UAlbany graduation weekend in mid-May. Every room within 20 miles is booked at maximum rates and traffic is chaos. Second-worst: late March budget-fight week.
