Saratoga Springs day trip from Albany
Saratoga Springs is 35 minutes north and one of the best day trips in the Northeast — here's exactly how to do it.
Getting there and when to go
It's 35 minutes on I-87 north from downtown Albany. Amtrak runs but the schedule is thin — drive if you can. Racing season (late July through Labor Day) is Saratoga at its peak — expect crowds, $30 parking, and hotel rates in the town itself hitting $400. Off-season is more relaxed and honestly a better first visit. October foliage is stunning.
What to do
Broadway is the main strip — walk it end to end (about 8 blocks), stopping at Impressions of Saratoga, Northshire Bookstore, and the Adelphi Hotel bar for a cocktail. The Saratoga Spa State Park is 15 minutes' walk south — mineral springs, the Roosevelt Bathhouse, and the National Museum of Dance. Congress Park downtown has the Canfield Casino museum. The Saratoga Race Course itself is worth a walk-around even off-season.
Where to eat
15 Church is the destination restaurant — around $45 a main, reserve two weeks ahead. Hattie's Chicken Shack for fried chicken at $22. Mrs. London's Bakery for pastries and lunch. Druthers Brewing for beer and a $18 burger. Skip the tourist places right on Broadway between Congress and Phila that lean chain-adjacent.
Before you book
The questions people ask about Downtown Albany, answered with this month’s numbers.
Yes — pair it with Troy on the way back for antiques and dinner, or head further north to Lake George (30 more minutes) for the lake.
Ideally yes. Once you’re in Saratoga you can walk everywhere, but getting there without a car means Amtrak's limited schedule.
