Skip or save time on these
The USS Slater is fine if you love naval history, but $10 and 90 minutes on a WWII destroyer escort will lose most visitors. The Albany Aqua Ducks amphibious tour at $30 is the classic tourist trap — cute for kids, otherwise skip. The Palace Theatre is a beautiful venue but only worth visiting if you’re seeing a specific show. Empire State Plaza's underground concourse art is genuinely good but people rush through it — give it 30 minutes if you’re doing it, not a passing glance.
Where to spend the time instead
The New York State Museum (free) deserves 3 hours, not the 45 minutes most tourists give it — the 9/11 exhibit and the Adirondack diorama are world-class. The Corning Tower observation deck (free, 42nd floor) beats the paid Aqua Ducks tour for city views. The Albany Institute of History & Art ($10) has genuinely good Hudson River School paintings. Walking Center Square and Lark Street beats any organized tour.
