Albany has a rougher reputation than the tourist experience delivers. Downtown, Empire State Plaza, Center Square, Washington Park, Pine Hills, and Delaware Avenue are all fine for visitors day and night. The city's genuine crime concerns concentrate in West Hill, parts of Arbor Hill north of Clinton Avenue, and the South End — none of which have any reason to draw a tourist. Stay in the areas this site recommends and you’ll never see a problem.
The practical rules
Standard mid-sized-city awareness applies: don’t walk empty side streets alone after 1am, use rideshare rather than walking 25 blocks late at night, don’t leave visible items in your car (car break-ins are the most common tourist-affecting crime here). The blocks immediately around the bus station on Broadway can feel unsettled — grab your rideshare a block away if arriving late. The riverfront trail is fine during the day, less so after dark.
