Seven outdoor options within 30 minutes of Albany, ranked by scenery, effort and payoff.

The top four

1. Thacher State Park, 20 minutes southwest. The Indian Ladder Trail down the escarpment is the single best short hike in the region — 1.5 miles round trip, 400 feet of elevation, waterfalls in spring. 2. Kayaking the Corning Preserve on the Hudson. Downtown Riverfront Park has rentals in summer through Upstate Kayak Rentals. 3. Biking the Mohawk-Hudson Bike Trail, 40+ paved miles that you pick up right in downtown Albany. 4. Five Rivers Environmental Education Center in Delmar (15 min) — free, quiet, well-marked trails, great for birding.

Five through seven

5. Peebles Island State Park in Cohoes (15 min), an easy 1.5-mile loop around a river island where the Mohawk meets the Hudson. 6. Cross-country skiing at Capital Hills at Albany golf course when there's snow — it opens the trails to skiers in winter. 7. The Pine Bush Preserve, 3,300 acres of rare inland pine barrens right in the city. Trails are marked but drainage is poor after rain. Skipped: swimming — the Hudson isn’t clean enough, and public pools are limited to residents in most Albany municipalities.

The questions people ask about Downtown Albany, answered with this month’s numbers.

What's the best outdoor spot without hiking?

The Corning Preserve on the Hudson — flat, paved, riverside, and you can walk, bike, or just sit. It's the most accessible outdoor space in Albany proper.

Where can you actually see the Adirondacks?

On a clear day, from the Corning Tower observation deck or the top of the Indian Ladder Trail at Thacher Park. Neither requires you to drive to the Adirondacks themselves.
