Albany With Kids: A 2-Day Plan Under $150 in Admissions

Two days with 6 attractions, most of them free, and none requiring kids to stand still for long.
Day 1: the free stuff downtown
9:30am: Capitol tour. Kids handle the one-hour tour surprisingly well — the Million Dollar Staircase carved faces become a game of counting. Free. 11am: Corning Tower observation deck. Free, and the elevator ride and the view sell themselves. Noon: lunch at the concourse.
1pm to 4pm: New York State Museum. Free. The carousel on the top floor is $1 per ride and is the highlight for any kid under 10. The Adirondack diorama and mastodon skeleton work for older kids. Dinner: pizza at Marisa's Place or DeFazio's in Troy if you’re willing to drive.
Day 2: outdoor and animal
9am: drive 20 minutes to the Helderberg escarpment. Thacher State Park has the Indian Ladder Trail (May through November) — a genuinely dramatic cliff walk kids remember for years. Free entry, small parking fee. Pack a picnic.
1pm: back to Albany. Washington Park has the lake, ducks, and playgrounds. If it's between April and October, the Albany Aqua Ducks amphibious tour runs from the river; check the schedule because it's inconsistent. Alternatively, drive to the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center in Delmar (free, easy trails, a real working nature center with live animals in the visitor building).
Where to sleep with kids
Best options: Homewood Suites on Washington Avenue (kitchen, pool, breakfast included) or Embassy Suites downtown (two-room suites, pool, breakfast). Avoid the smaller boutique hotels — no pool, no breakfast, no forgiveness for a 6am wakeup.
Both hotels have parking included, which for a family with car seats and gear matters more than location. Neither is walking distance to the Capitol but both are a 5-minute drive.

For two days, yes. For a week, only if you’re combining it with Saratoga in summer or the Adirondacks. The city itself is a two-day family destination.
6 to 12. Under 6 the Capitol tour is a struggle. Over 13 the carousel loses its appeal but the museum and Thacher still work.
