A 2.5-mile self-guided walk covering 12 stops from the Hudson waterfront to Washington Park.

Stops 1 to 5: waterfront to Capitol

Start at the Corning Preserve riverfront at 10am. Walk under I-787 to Broadway. Stop 2: the SUNY Plaza building (formerly the Delaware and Hudson Railroad headquarters, 1918, a Marcus Reynolds Flemish Gothic showpiece). Stop 3: the Kenmore Hotel on North Pearl, where Legs Diamond drank. Stop 4: Clinton Square and St. Peter's Episcopal, the second-oldest congregation in the state.

Stop 5: the New York State Capitol at State Street. Even without going in, walk around the outside — the Great Western Staircase is visible from the street entrance and the building was 32 years in construction, ending in 1899.

Stops 6 to 9: Empire State Plaza and up the hill

Stop 6: Empire State Plaza itself. Love it or hate it, it's the single most ambitious piece of civic architecture in New York outside Manhattan. Walk it end to end. Stop 7: the New York State Museum entrance (worth going inside if you have time; the Adirondack diorama alone justifies it). Stop 8: the Egg performing arts venue. Stop 9: the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Eagle Street, 1852, one of the earliest Gothic Revival cathedrals in America.

By now you’ve been walking for two hours. Coffee break at Stacks or Superior Merchandise on Broadway.

Stops 10 to 12: Center Square to Washington Park

Stop 10: Center Square's Lancaster and Hudson Streets, some of the best-preserved brownstone rows in the northeast. Stop 11: Lark Street itself, the commercial spine — a working neighborhood shopping street, not a tourist strip. Stop 12: Washington Park's east entrance at State Street, with the Moses fountain, King memorial, and the lake house.

End at the Washington Park Lake House around 1pm and grab lunch at Lark & Lily or on Madison Avenue. Sleep anywhere downtown or in Center Square and you’re within 10 minutes of the start of this walk.

Before you book

The questions people ask about Center Square, answered with this month’s numbers.

Is the route hilly?

Yes. Albany means climbing from the river up to Washington Park — about 150 feet of elevation gain. Nothing extreme but wear real shoes.

Can I do this walk in winter?

Yes, but Empire State Plaza's outdoor spaces are exposed and cold. December through February, cut through the underground concourse instead.
