Tulip Fest is Albany's signature event, drawing 100,000-plus people over 2 days — here's how to actually enjoy it.
When and where
Tulip Fest happens the second weekend of May, Mother's Day weekend, in Washington Park — 200,000 tulips planted the previous fall bloom for roughly two weeks between late April and mid-May. The festival itself is Saturday and Sunday: main stages near the lake, food vendors along State Street park entrance, and a kids' area near the Moses Fountain. It's free.
How to do it right
Come Saturday morning before 11am or Sunday morning — by 1pm both days the park is packed shoulder-to-shoulder near the stages. Park on the residential side streets north of the park (Hackett Boulevard area) rather than trying to park on Madison. Better yet, stay downtown and walk. The tulips look best on the west side of the park along Willett Street — most tourists cluster near the stages and miss the actual flowers.
Where to stay
Book three months ahead. Downtown hotels (Hilton, Renaissance, Hampton Inn) spike to $210 to $260 for the weekend. The Morgan State House on the park edge is $220 and books first — it's a 30-second walk to the tulips. If you strike out downtown, Wolf Road hotels stay reasonable at $155 and are a 12-minute drive.
