Thanksgiving week in Albany runs unlike any other. The Legislature isn’t in session, state offices close Wednesday-Friday, and downtown corporate workers take the whole week off. By Tuesday afternoon the streets around Empire State Plaza are quieter than Christmas. Hotels that ran $170 the previous Tuesday drop to $95-110 through Sunday.
The unusual pattern: rates don’t spike Thanksgiving night. Family travel skews to airports and highway corridors, not downtown hotels. The Renaissance, Hilton and Hampton Inn Downtown all sit under $130 Wednesday through Saturday. This is the cheapest downtown-Albany weekend of the year outside December 26-30.

Thursday itself: most restaurants closed, but Jack's Oyster House, 677 Prime and a handful of hotel restaurants run Thanksgiving service by reservation ($55-85 per person). Book by early November. Friday: about 60% of downtown restaurants reopen. Saturday: nearly everything. State Museum closed Thursday, open Friday-Sunday.
Black Friday is a real event at Crossgates Mall in Guilderland and Colonie Center — old-school lines and door-busters if that appeals. Downtown is empty Friday, which is the appeal. Walk Empire State Plaza's normally-crowded concourse alone, ride to the Corning Tower deck (open Friday), eat dinner anywhere without a reservation. It's an odd, roomy version of the city.
