The Best Scenic Driving Route from Albany: A One-Day Loop
Winding road along the Helderberg escarpment in autumn
A 90-mile loop with 6 stops that shows off the Hudson, the escarpment, and the Mohawk in one day.
Morning: south along the Hudson
Leave downtown Albany at 9am on Route 9W south. First stop at 9:30 is Papscanee Island Nature Preserve or, on the west bank, the Coeymans landing — quick riverside views. Continue to Coxsackie for coffee at 10am at Cafe Mezzo on Reed Street. From there detour to Olana State Historic Site (30 more minutes) for the Frederic Church house and its designed views. Grounds open free daily, house tour extra. Give it 90 minutes.
Lunch in the city of Hudson on Warren Street — Grazin' Diner or Backbar. This is the halfway point of the loop and you should be here by 12:30.
Afternoon: west and up the escarpment
Leave Hudson at 2pm heading west on Route 23 to Cairo, then north on Route 32 back toward Albany. Cut west at Route 143 into the Catskill foothills, then take Route 85 up onto the Helderberg escarpment to Thacher State Park. The Overlook and the Indian Ladder Trail (May through November only) give you the entire Hudson Valley from 1,100 feet up.
This stretch takes about 90 minutes of driving but the payoff at Thacher is the single best view in the region. Give the park an hour minimum.
Evening: back to Albany via Voorheesville
Come down off the escarpment via New Salem and Voorheesville, then take Route 20 east back to Albany. You’ll be downtown by 6pm. Dinner at Cafe Capriccio, then bed. The whole loop is 90 miles and takes about 9 hours with stops.
Sleep downtown Albany. Don’t try to do this loop from Saratoga or the Berkshires — you’ll add an hour on each end and skip the best stop.
Before you book
The questions people ask about Downtown Albany, answered with this month’s numbers.
Mid-October for foliage, or late April to early May for the tulips and dogwood. Avoid mid-summer weekends — Hudson gets swamped with day-trippers.
The driving is fine but Thacher's Indian Ladder Trail closes November through April and Olana's house tours are limited. You’ll still get 70% of it.
