How Saratoga racing season affects Albany hotels

For 40 days from mid-July to Labor Day, Albany rooms fill with Saratoga overflow and rates climb 35%.

The overflow effect

Saratoga Race Course runs its meet from about July 16 through Labor Day, six days a week. Saratoga Springs has roughly 2,500 hotel rooms and needs closer to 6,000 on peak weekends. The overflow pushes 25 miles south into Albany, Colonie and Latham. Hotels along I-87 exits 13-24 fill first because they’re the direct shot up the Northway.

Rate impact varies by day. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday of racing weeks are worst. Travers Weekend (last Saturday in August) is the peak — the Desmond, Marriott Albany and Hilton Garden Inn Latham all sell out and hit $280-350. Non-racing months this same room is $130.

How to work around it

If you’re visiting Albany itself (not the races), come Sunday-Tuesday during racing season. Rates drop back near normal, restaurants have tables, and you can still day-trip up to Saratoga if you want. Downtown Albany hotels feel the effect less than Colonie ones — the Renaissance and Hampton Inn Downtown are targeted at state business, not racing tourists.

If you want to actually go to the track, staying in Albany saves real money. A room at Hampton Inn Wolf Road at $170 plus a $22 Uber to the track (or $8 on the free Saratoga shuttle from the Wilton Mall park-and-ride) beats a Saratoga room at $340. Post time is 1:10pm; leave Albany by 11:30am.

Before you book

The questions people ask about Downtown Albany, answered with this month’s numbers.

Does Amtrak run to Saratoga during the meet?

Yes, Amtrak's Ethan Allen and Adirondack stop at Saratoga Springs. From Albany-Rensselaer it's a 40-minute ride, roughly $18 each way. Then a $12 cab to the track.

Is Travers weekend really that different?

Yes. It's the single busiest weekend of the year across the whole Capital Region. Every hotel from Kingston to Glens Falls fills. Book by April.
