Friday afternoon through Sunday night, splitting time between the city and 2 excellent side trips.

Friday: arrive and eat

Land or drive in by 4pm. Check into a downtown hotel — Renaissance Albany, Kimpton, or Hampton Inn Downtown are the three I’d rank first. Walk to Lark Street for early drinks at The Point or Justin's. Dinner at 7:30 at Cafe Capriccio (book a week ahead) or, if you want something more casual, El Loco. Nightcap at Savoy Taproom on Lark for the beer list, or McGeary's on Clinton Square for live Irish music Friday nights.

This is your low-effort evening. Save the walking for Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday: Troy and Cohoes Falls

9am drive north. Start at the Troy Farmers Market (Saturdays only, Uncle Sam Atrium in winter, riverfront summer). Coffee and pastry there. Walk River Street until noon. Lunch at Peck's Arcade or, cheaper, the Placid Baker for a sandwich.

Afternoon: drive to Cohoes Falls Overlook (20 minutes from Troy). The falls are the second-largest in New York after Niagara and almost nobody visits. Free, five minutes to see, worth it. From there back to Albany by 5pm. Dinner downtown — try Ama Cocina or Jack's Oyster House, the latter dating to 1913 and worth a visit for the room alone. Sleep downtown Albany.

Sunday: Saratoga or Shaker Heritage

Two options depending on interest. Option A: Saratoga Springs, 35 minutes north. Broadway shopping, Saratoga Spa State Park mineral springs, Congress Park. Lunch at Hattie's or Boca Bistro. Head back by 4pm. Option B: Shaker Heritage Society in Colonie (America's first Shaker settlement, 15 minutes from downtown) plus the Pruyn House and a walk in Five Rivers Environmental Education Center in Delmar.

Either way, back to Albany by 5pm for an early dinner and departure. Home base all three nights should be one downtown hotel — don’t move.

Before you book

The questions people ask about Downtown Albany, answered with this month’s numbers.

Do I need a car for a long weekend?

Yes. Friday you don’t, but Saturday and Sunday require driving. Rent from the airport or Enterprise on Central Avenue.

Is Saratoga better than Troy for a day trip?

Saratoga in summer (racing season is late July through August). Troy any other time of year, and specifically Saturday mornings for the market.
