When the color actually peaks
Albany itself peaks around October 15, roughly a week behind the Adirondacks and a week ahead of the Hudson Valley south of Kingston. Washington Park, Buckingham Pond and the pin oaks along Madison Ave hit full color in the second and third weeks. Thacher State Park, 20 miles southwest on the Helderberg escarpment, peaks a few days earlier and is where locals actually go.
The color window is 10-14 days. Miss it by a week either side and you get either green-yellow (early) or bare-brown (late). Check the DEC foliage report weekly from late September. A wet, warm September pushes peak later; a dry cool one pulls it earlier.
What it costs and what's crowded
October is Albany's second-highest rate month after graduation weekend in May. Downtown hotels run $165-220, with Columbus Day weekend the single most expensive stretch. Saratoga hotels are worse — often $300+ — which pushes overflow into Albany and Colonie. Book by August for the second and third weekends.
Restaurants get slammed Friday and Saturday. Reserve at Yono's, Cafe Capriccio, Jack's Oyster House and 677 Prime at least a week ahead. Sunday nights are noticeably easier. Weekday visits mid-October are the sweet spot: peak color, midweek rates under $145, and no wait at any of the above.
