A Week in Albany: 7 Days That Cover the Whole Capital Region
Capital Region map with pinned destinations
How to spend 7 nights based in Albany with 5 day trips that use every corner of the region.
Days 1 to 3: the city itself
Day 1: Capitol, Corning Tower, State Museum, dinner on Lark Street. Day 2: Albany Institute, Schuyler Mansion, Washington Park, dinner downtown. Day 3: USS Slater (if April to November), Ten Broeck Mansion, Historic Cherry Hill, Mansion District walking tour. Three full days is enough to genuinely see Albany without rushing.
Sleep in one downtown hotel the entire week. Moving hotels wastes half a day and gains you nothing. The Renaissance and Kimpton both have covered parking, which matters if you’re day-tripping.
Days 4 to 6: day trips
Day 4: Troy (River Street, RPI, Emma Willard, Frear's Troy Cash Bazaar building). Day 5: Saratoga Springs (Broadway, Saratoga Spa State Park, National Museum of Racing). Day 6: Schenectady (Union College's Nott Memorial, Proctors Theatre, the Stockade District) plus Cohoes Falls on the drive back.
Each is 20 to 40 minutes from Albany. Leave by 9:30, back by 6, dinner in Albany. Don’t try to combine two in one day — you’ll rush both.
Day 7: the Hudson Valley or the mountains
Two final options depending on season. Warm months: drive south to Olana State Historic Site (Frederic Church's house on the Hudson, 40 minutes) and Hudson city for lunch on Warren Street. Cold months: drive west to Thacher State Park on the Helderberg escarpment for the cliff-edge overlook — 20 minutes from downtown and one of the great underrated views in the northeast.
Return to Albany for a final dinner at Yono's, which has been the special-occasion restaurant here since 1986 and deserves the reputation.

Not if you use day trips. As a purely urban destination, three or four days is the ceiling. With the region included, a week works.
The Renaissance Albany on Broadway. Downtown location, covered parking, and the historic Dewitt Clinton building has more character than the chain competition.
