Eight Albany-area properties for a weekend that isn’t obviously a business trip in disguise — with honest notes on which are worth the premium.
Actual character, not just marketing
The Morgan State House on Englewood Place is the strongest romantic pick in the city — a 19th-century brownstone directly overlooking Washington Park, with 15 rooms furnished with real antiques and a garden courtyard that's genuinely beautiful in May and June. No restaurant on-site, which is a feature: you’ll walk to New World Bistro Bar or Cafe Capriccio. The State House on State Street is a smaller, similarly-run brownstone with a stronger breakfast program.
For a weekend away from the city entirely, the Mansion Hill Inn in the Mansion District combines walkability to downtown with a smaller, quieter feel than the chain hotels. Six rooms, a decent on-site restaurant, and rates that undercut the Renaissance.
Consider Saratoga instead
If romance is the actual point and you’re willing to drive 35 minutes north, Saratoga Springs offers a much stronger inventory: the Adelphi Hotel is the standout, a fully restored 1877 property on Broadway with a serious cocktail bar and one of the region's better restaurants (Morrissey's). The Mirror Lake Inn is further afield but a genuine destination. For anniversaries, drive. For a Saturday-night city break, stay in Albany at the Morgan State House and eat at Yono's — that combination is hard to beat within the city itself.
