How legislative session affects Albany hotels

January through mid-June, midweek downtown rates jump $60-90 because 3,000 lobbyists need beds Tuesday-Thursday.
The pattern
The New York State Legislature convenes the first Wednesday of January and typically wraps in mid-June. During those five months, downtown Albany runs on a lobbyist calendar: session days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, occasionally Thursday. Hotels within a 10-minute walk of the Capitol — the Hilton, Renaissance, Hampton Inn Downtown, Morgan State House — fill Monday and Tuesday nights.
Rates that would sit at $140 on a random Wednesday climb to $210-240. Fridays and Saturdays are the opposite: the same rooms fall to $110 because everyone's driven back to Manhattan or Long Island. If you’re visiting Albany for tourism during session, come Friday afternoon and leave Sunday.
Where to stay if you must come midweek
Wolf Road and Colonie hotels barely register the session effect. Holiday Inn Express Wolf Road, Hampton Inn Albany-Wolf Road and the Marriott Albany stay $130-160 midweek even in April. Add a $18 Uber into downtown and you still save.
Session ends around June 15-20 depending on the budget fight. The last two weeks are chaos — 3am nights at the Capitol, lobbyists booking rooms they don’t use. Book anywhere but downtown. Once session adjourns, downtown rates drop 30% overnight and stay low until fall conferences start in September.

Budget week (late March through April 1) and the final two weeks of session (mid-June) are the tightest. State of the State in early January is one big night but not a full week.
Downtown ones do, roughly 20 nights per session. If you see availability at the Renaissance on a Tuesday in March, book it — that's unusual.
