The ones that get it right
The Hilton Albany leads: 14 ADA rooms, most with roll-in showers rather than tub transfers, and the accessible entrance on Lodge Street is on the same level as the lobby — no ramp gymnastics. The Renaissance Albany has fewer accessible rooms (nine) but the newer 2015 build means door widths, bathroom clearances, and lever handles all meet 2010 ADA standards cleanly. The Hyatt Place Albany/Downtown is the newest of the three and offers the widest bathroom clearances I’ve measured, plus visual/audio alarm kits at the desk on request.
The Desmond Hotel is the strongest suburban pick: single-level layouts in two of its four courtyards mean you can request a room with no elevator dependency, which matters during winter power blips.
Older buildings, mixed results
The Morgan State House on Washington Park is a beautiful brownstone and completely wrong for wheelchair users — stairs at the entrance, narrow interior doors, no elevator. The 74 State Hotel has one accessible room per floor but the elevator has failed twice on visits I know of; ask about maintenance history when booking. The Best Western Albany Airport and Holiday Inn Express Latham have compliant rooms but the shower benches are the fold-down plastic kind that flex — bring your own transfer bench if you rely on one. Always call the property directly to confirm the specific accessible room type rather than relying on booking-site checkboxes.
